How To Play
It’s simple really…
Split up into teams of 2. Each player on each team takes turns being the Reader and the Interpreter.
The Reader – hindered by a cheek retractor (dental mouthguard), they pick a card from the deck of ridiculously funny phrases, and try to say the phrase on their card. This is MUCH harder than is seems, because the mouthguard prevents the Reader from pursing their lips to pronounce Bs, Fs, Ms, Qs, Vs, Ps, and Ys.
Of course, the card deck is full of phrases that include these letters, making them not only difficult to pronounce, but side-splitting funny to watch and listen.
The Interpreter – their only job…try to understand what the Reader is attempting to say, and repeat it back to them exactly.
What Is a Cheek Retractor (Mouth Guard)?
A cheek retractor is a medical instrument used in the practice of dentistry and oral surgery. The cheek retractor is designed to pull the cheeks away from the mouth and hold them in place to leave the mouth exposed during a procedure.
They also make saying certain letters almost impossible. If you don’t have any cheek retractors, use your fingers, stick them in your mouth and stretch your lips as wide open as you can. Then try to say a phrase like “the baboon’s bright red butt”. Next to impossible isn’t it?
Our Origin
We first saw the cheek retractors in the movie The Boss, with Melissa McCarthy. It was hysterical watching her trying to carry on a conversation while getting her teeth whitened.
Melissa and Kristen Schaal did an interview with James Corden, where they wore the cheek retractors for part of the chat.
We just took that concept…and turned it into a game.
